With the increase of lifespan expectancy over the years with the advances in technology, medicine and standard of living, the Aged Care industry will continue growing and require more dedicated workers. The demand for aged care beds will increase more than 70,000 places in the next 5 years. With more people requiring aged care beds, they will require a larger workforce in the industry. Have the necessary education qualifications
To become an Aged Care worker you will need at least a Certificate IV in Ageing Support! There are many options for you to get qualified. There are Aged Support courses that have government supported funding, with options for full time and part-time courses.
Get certified with a Certificate IV in Ageing Support that runs once a week for 12 to 18 months with support and funding from Skills First Funding for those eligible. Contact our Career Advisors for more information!
Patient, flexible and understanding
Patience is one of the most important aspects to become a successful aged care worker. Dealing with older clients requires a lot of patience and empathy. All clients react differently in any given scenario and Aged Care workers need to be patient and flexible in their caring methods. If you do not possess patience and flexibility, the Aged Care industry is not for you.
Responsible
The safety of those in your care is the biggest responsibility of an Aged Care worker. Their families and employers must trust you to assist the older patients lead a dignified life, so you must be trustworthy and dependable. To become an Aged Care worker, you need to be responsible and reliable. The people in your care and their loved ones depend on you, you must be there for them.
Communicate effectively with clients and their families
In your Aged Care career, you will need to interact with people of all ages, your older clients and their families. Being able to communicate with those in your care throughout the day is important, but also being able to communicate to their children, grandchildren and family about their wellbeing is equally as important.
Able to cope with the physical demands of the job
Working in the Aged Care industry requires you to be on your feet all day, with tasks ranging from assisting clients with dressing, personal hygiene and their mobility, to running errands on their behalf. While it is not a fast paced lifestyle they lead, your clients require you to be there for them constantly for assistance; this requires a lot of energy and a certain fitness level to be able to meet the needs of your clients. If you are unable to cope with the physical demands of the job, working as an Aged Care worker may not be for you.
