How to Start a Childcare Center

Have you worked with children, or taken care of children and thought to yourself, “I could open up my own childcare center”?

Ever thought of becoming your own boss and managing the center with your own ideas as you see fit?

Do you like caring for children, but also work from home?

You can do both by starting your own family day care business!

With the growing need for quality education for our young ones, the childcare industry is booming. Those with entrepreneurial minds can take this opportunity to start a childcare business of their own.

However, getting started requires a lot of hard work! There are many steps and factors to be considered when starting your own childcare center. As working with children is highly regulated by the government – as it should be – there are many guidelines, background checks and legislations that must be abided. Be aware of local government planning controls, health department rules and food safety requirements.

How do I start my Childcare business?

· Get Qualified

To start your childcare business, you will need to have education qualifications. Take a Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care course! This course will provide you with the necessary leadership skills to start your business, knowledge of how to provide for babies, toddlers and children, compliance regulations in an education and care service, design and implement curriculum and professional practice. All crucial for starting your own childcare business.

This qualification is crucial for any position in the childcare industry, not just your own business. With this qualification you can become the Family Day Care Coordinator or Childcare Center Manager in your own facility, or other facilities in the future.

· Understand and Meet the Family Day Care Requirements and Regulations

To open any childcare service, it is important to understand the regulatory and funding requirements. The Education and Care Services National Law and Regulations applies to most education and care service types in Australia.

Check the ACECQA guidelines to understand the requirements and regulations.

· Market Research

You need to determine whether there is a demand for childcare centers in your area. Are there people that will enroll in your childcare center? Research through your local council and the internet to have a better understanding of your demographic.

Consider how many children you will look after. This is very important as this will affect how many workers you will need and the size of your venue. This will also affect costs and how much you are planning to charge.

If this is your first business venture, consider starting at a smaller scale as opposed to competing with centers that care for over 50 children. You will probably need to start off with space for 25 to 30 children.

· Apply for All Necessary Licenses

Once you understand the legislations to follow to start your childcare business, you must obtain necessary approval. The first process is to gain approval from your state regulator before being eligible to gain approval from the government.

To open and manage your own family day care service, you will need to apply for approval from your state regulator before being eligible for government approval. Each state has its own rules and regulations, however, all applications are done though ACECQA.

For the state of Victoria, the state regulator is the Department of Education and Training.
